Assistant Editor, Academic Editorial

The opportunity

We are looking for an Assistant Editor to work on the fashion and textiles education list as part of the Bloomsbury Visual Arts team. The list includes practical texts on applied fashion and textile design and management, including pattern cutting, fashion illustration, trend forecasting and visual merchandising, as well as more scholarly and theoretical works on fashion history and culture. Reporting to the Publisher, this is an opportunity to build on your publishing experience in a unique environment: the successful candidate will gain specialist skills in both commissioning for the student and scholarly market and developing and helping to shape highly illustrated texts and working with a stellar list of established and up-and-coming authors.

The role

  • Helping to plan, coordinate and project manage titles through all stages of the publishing process
  • Commissioning select titles to an agreed target, under the guidance of the Publisher
  • Managing editorial processes and the peer review process
  • Preparing final typescripts, including some text development work, prior to  handover to production, and arranging for digital ancillaries as required
  • Writing and editing cover copy and blurbs
  • Drafting cover briefs
  • Liaising with authors, and colleagues across all departments
  • Assisting with backlist management
  • Conducting market research
  • Providing input for sales and marketing activities

Knowledge, skills and experience 

The ideal applicant for this role will be: 

  • familiar with publishing processes and have publishing experience;
  • an excellent communicator;
  • able to multi-task and prioritise;
  • organised and focussed on problem-solving;
  • meticulous, with excellent attention to detail and accuracy;
  • confident to work unsupervised;
  • professional and have a can-do attitude;
  • numerate and computer literate.

Additional information

The role is a full-time permanent position and is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are: Wednesday and Thursday.
