Production Editor, Production A&P

The opportunity

We are looking for a production editor to join our expanding Professional Division, which publishes books, journals and digital product on the subjects of Law, Tax and Accounting under the Bloomsbury Professional and Hart Publishing imprints. The role reports directly into the Head of Production (Academic & Professional) and contributes significantly to the preparation of up-to-date content for legal and tax / accountancy professional markets.

The role

The role is that of a dedicated production editor for Bloomsbury Professional’s series of law reports, the Family Court Reports. Key tasks include guiding law report issues from procuring judgment transcripts to passing final files for fortnightly print editions and online publishing (using teams of freelance suppliers).  You will work closely with Production colleagues as well as other in-house departments, freelance editorial suppliers, and prepress suppliers. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual to make a significant contribution to a unique and key title within the company’s growing family law list.

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Steering titles through all relevant stages of production following agreed workflows and in line with applicable divisional Key Dates
  • Monitoring timely (to Key Dates) delivery to the department from other departments of incoming materials to fit with production schedules
  • Controlling spending by implementing agreed purchasing strategies
  • Enforcing applicable SLAs across supplier base
  • Implementing House Style and maintain quality standards to agreed high levels
  • Administering financial processes, such as invoice approval and WIP / job closing, using company systems to meet Group requirements
  • Any other appropriate tasks as directed by Line Manager or Head of Production

Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • proven copy-editing and proof-reading skills
  • production-editorial experience; experience in a professional law publishing environment / law reports publishing or a degree in law would be an advantage
  • excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • a keen eye for detail
  • IT skills (knowledge of Word essential and familiarity with Adobe products desirable)
  • knowledge of XML-first workflows (desirable but not essential)

The role is a full-time permanent position and is at our The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP OR at our Oxford office, Kemp House, Chawley Park, Cumnor Hill, Oxford OX2 9PH on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are: Wednesday & Thursday
