The opportunity

Bloomsbury Digital Resources is committed to serving a global community of students, scholars, instructors, and librarians by providing creative online research and learning environments that deliver excellence and originality. We are currently looking to recruit TWO highly organized, enthusiastic and self-motivated Digital Editorial Assistants to join our dynamic team.

These roles have responsibility for supporting the expansion of the Digital Resources division. It is largely editorial and administrative in nature and is vitally important to the success of our growing department. The successful candidates will work across our Visual Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences portfolio, reporting to the Portfolio Director for Visual Arts and Senior Commissioning Editor for Humanities and Social Sciences. Examples of our market-leading digital products include Bloomsbury Fashion Central, Artfilms, Bloomsbury Philosophy Library and Bloomsbury History: Theory & Method.

The role

Each Digital Editorial Assistant will play a pivotal part in the delivery and ongoing success of an exciting pipeline of digital products and product updates.   

Tasks will be varied but key responsibilities will include:

Assisting the Digital Editorial team with new product signings

  • Researching the potential for commissioning digital products in new areas (e.g. by carrying out academic course research and market analysis)
  • Carrying out market research (e.g. surveys and interviews with faculty and librarian staff)

Supporting product launches and updates

  • Managing all digital-first content (such as Articles, Lesson Plans, Subject Guides, and Biblioguides) from contract, to peer review, to final publication
  • Proofreading articles and preparing files for handover to production
  • Ensuring content delivery is kept on track and highlighting problem areas for manager intervention
  • Maintaining accurate administrative and Biblio records for digital products
  • Creating and updating content lists
  • Monitoring editorial budgets
  • Investigating and clearing rights for eBooks and image content
  • Managing and maintaining records for Editorial Advisory Boards
  • Assisting with product testing
  • Researching content improvements to existing resources

Supporting the Digital Editorial Team and wider Bloomsbury Digital Resources department

  • Managing contract administration and tracking third party files
  • Liaising with external editorial advisors
  • Taking minutes at meetings
  • Creating reports
  • Acting as a product champion and projecting enthusiasm internally as well as externally
  • If required, assuming role of departmental ‘point person’ for digital publishing systems, like Bloomsbury Content Manager or Biblio

Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • A high tolerance – even enthusiasm -- for tracking and reporting
  • A ‘can do’ attitude and willingness to ‘muck in’
  • Solid administrative experience a plus
  • Knowledge or experience of academic publishing a plus
  • An interest in digital publishing
  • An ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Calmness under pressure
  • Attention to detail
  • An ability to work well as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • A solutions-focused mentality

Additional information
Each role is a full-time, permanent position with a salary of £24,000

Each role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for each role are: Wednesdays and Thursdays.

As an Assistant role, each position is eligible for Bloomsbury’s Rental Deposit Loan Scheme. To assist candidates who want to start and to establish a career in publishing, Bloomsbury offers an interest-free rental deposit to support securing somewhere to live. The rental deposit loan can be up to £3,000 and will be paid back over 2 years.
