Production Assistant, Head of Zeus

The opportunity

Head of Zeus, part of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, is a publisher of fiction, narrative nonfiction and children’s books, committed to new talent, great writing and quality in everything we produce. With our 35-strong team based in Clerkenwell (and remote), we have centuries of expertise, global reach, and a nimble, creative, decisive culture.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team of five as Production Assistant. The ideal candidate will be highly organised, with a keen eye for detail and an enthusiasm for books and the publishing world.

Reporting to the Head of Production, your primary responsibility will be looking after the paperback list – first outing and reprints. You will be part of a busy and collaborative group and will work closely with all internal teams, as well as liaising with outside suppliers such as printers. You will ensure that every project is produced on time, within budget, and is of the highest quality.

The role is ideal for someone with a can-do attitude, unphased by the idea of multiple and tight deadlines, and who is interested in developing their skills in the craft of making books.

The role

  • Circulating paperback prelims for sign off.
  • Supervising the final production of the paperback titles – making print ready PDFs, preparing the PO and sending to print; checking printers’ proofs.
  • Supervising the production of paperback reprints in the same way.
  • Checking and approving printers’ invoices for relevant titles.
  • Setting up titles for POD.
  • Providing general organisational support to the team – maintaining the scheduling boards, sending files to foreign publishers on behalf of the Rights team.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • Keen eye for detail and a good head for numbers
  • IT skills (knowledge of Office is essential and familiarity with Adobe products and Biblio desirable)
