Financial Controller, Finance

The opportunity

This role sits within the Finance department located at Bloomsbury’s Head Office in Bedford Square, London. The Financial Controller leads on financial reporting for the Bloomsbury operations, managing a team of up to 8 people. The role is responsible for producing robust monthly financial accounts, maintaining an appropriate controls environment and ensuring compliance with the Group’s accounting standards (IFRS).

 

The role requires the performance of detailed reviews, including analysis against the budget, to ensure that financial reporting is correct on a monthly basis.

 

The role

  • Deliver timely and accurate monthly management accounts, performing robust reviews of the financials to ensure compliance with the Group’s accounting policies.
  • Manage and develop the financial operations team of up to 8 people.
  • Ensure effective and efficient financial controls.
  • Review of key balance sheet accounts and entries prepared by the team to validate accuracy and compliance.
  • Month end reporting, commentary and analysis to explain the financials, including variance analysis against budget and prior year.
  • Communication of key aspects of financial performance with business partnering team.
  • To drive improvements in the monthly close process, focusing on process efficiencies and automation to reduce the working day timetable.
  • Support business partnering team with production of information for forecasts as required.
  • To manage the audit of the financials, ensuring timely delivery of the audit and resolution of queries.
  • Assist with key projects and business developments which require changes to accounting.
  • Opportunity to be involved in the Group’s finance transformation and review/implementation of financial systems.
     

Knowledge, skills and experience 

Academic Qualifications

  • Qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent)

 

Work Experience

  • Experience of delivering monthly management accounts in a high pressure, commercial environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering process and systems improvements.
  • Able to identify and raise risks, threats and opportunities.

 

Interpersonal & Management skills

  • Able to develop successful relationships with senior staff across the Group.
  • Proactive, energetic, pragmatic and hardworking.
  • Highly resilient and adaptable – able to work under pressure and manage multiple stakeholders.
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written, and ability to present financial information in a manner that can be understood by all recipients
  • Fast and accurate, attention to detail
  • Proactive and motivated, able to show initiative and work independently
  • Strong technical, analytical and judgement skills
  • Problem solver with a track record of undertaking and delivering projects

Technical Skills/Experience

  • Highly proficient in advanced excel functionality (sumifs, vlookup and pivot tables)

 

Additional information

The role is a full-time permanent position

Salary Pay Point: £85,000

The role is based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid-working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred).  Allocated office days for this role are Tuesday and Thursday.
